Woven wood roller window shades really stand out in hot weather. They are popular all along the coast and in tropical areas, so I often recommend bamboo window shades to my interior design students who want to create the tropical or cabana feel. They allow the bright beach sun to light rooms while filtering out the harshness. Supposedly natives first started using bamboo blinds to reduce the amount of heat entering the home. These wood blinds are great for hot humid areas because when rolled down, they stop sunlight but still let a breeze in.
They are also great for the natural look because at such small levels the wood has all kinds of unique twists and turns. Depending on the type of wood, they can bring to mind tropical Pacific or Caribbean islands. The Romans along the Mediterranean also used these kinds of blinds, and some people still call them Roman blinds to this day. The Roman blind is able to maintain a sense of elegance along with the casual sea image.
Some common woods used to make wood blinds are bamboo, reed, grass, light woods, and even synthetic materials, although I do not recommend synthetic materials to give that true beach look. The synthetic materials are so regular they become boring.
Bamboo and reed are more eclectic and free. The natural materials come in a variety of colors and can be dyed also. If you go with a grass wood blind, choose one with an edge binding that will keep the grass from breaking or flaking over your furniture. Otherwise, wood blinds are very easy to keep up. A little dusting or light going over with the vacuum cleaner is usually all that is needed.
Reed and bamboo will not warp in water so installing them near sea spray is not a problem. Of course pools and bathrooms are other common uses for roller wood blinds. Sometimes people can go overboard with the beach theme. Be careful you are not getting too tacky, especially when trying to recreate the beach in places Minnesota. If it is for escape that is fine, but wood reed roller window shades will never be considered the height of classical fashion.
